The Institute of the Information Society was created in June this year and registered on August 31, 2001. Institute's activity is targeted at creation of a basis for development of the Information Society, its fundamental elements: e-government, e-commerce, e-elections.

First steps on this way are to highlight this issue in the society, to create prerequisites for digital democracy.

Oleh Shevchuk became the Director of the Institute.

The Institute has launched the information project "Ukrainian Network of the Information Society" (www.e-ukraine.org.ua). This Web site has accumulated scientific and technologic investigations on the issues of the development of the Information Society. Similar Web sites were created in the developed countries and Russia.

The Institute exchanges its experience and information with the similar organizations in the NIS countries.

Program of the Institute of the Information Society

The Institute of the Information Society is being created in response to the European and international initiatives in the framework of creation of the Global Information Society and stimulation of creation of the national segments of this Society and implementation of the targets set forth by the Paris Memorandum on the Development of the Information Society.

Objectives of the Institute of the Information Society

The Institute's activities aim at highlighting of the issues of the Information Society, implementation of the informatization at different levels of the social life. Social projects on implementation of the information technology will partially mitigate social tension, appease existing conflicts and avert the new ones covering the main opposition for today - the divide of "the rich and poor" will be lessened at the expense of the availability of more chances and increase of living standards of the poor.

The ways the Institute's objectives will be implemented

1. Applied and theoretical investigations on the following topics:

  • Philosophic frameworks for the creation of the information Society
  • Creation of the Information Society in Ukraine
  • Investigation of the Ukrainian information resources
  • Electoral system in the Information Society
  • Mass media activities in the Information Society
  • Political system in the Information Society
2. Creation and regular update of the Internet Web site.

3. Creation of the library of articles, books and other information material related to the issues of the Information Society and Information and Telecommunication Technology in original English, French, Russian and Ukrainian and translated into Ukrainian.

4. Issue of the monographs dedicated to the issues of the Information Society.

5. Issue of the monthly reviews of the issues of the Information Society.

6. Conduction of the round-table discussions, seminars on the issues of the Information society.

7. Cooperation with international organizations concerned with issues of the Information Society.

8. Cooperation with international donor organization.

9. Conduction of rates, surveys, sociological investigations and monitoring.

10. Regular cooperation with mass media representatives, concerned with issues of the Information Society.
